Lift Higher

sept18_2016

Point to Ponder:
Who lifts you higher and who do you lift higher?

iGnite Neissa

by Neissa Brown Springmann

With an unbelievable one hundred and five of us in attendance at our tenth birthday bash on Thursday night (crushing all previous party attendance!), all weekend I have contemplated the conversations, smiling faces and old and new friendships that filled the room. It was a humbling, exciting and inspiring evening that will be difficult top. While I continued to reflect, what keeps coming to mind is the quote listed in the picture above, by Oprah, “Surround yourself only with people who are going to lift you higher.” This describes the iGnite community, made up of both our leaders and members.

iGnite’s official birthday isn’t until October, but in addition to celebrating in a variety of ways, one thing we will commemorate during the next six weeks are the people in our lives who have and continue to lift us higher.

For the sake of today’s journal, I’m starting with our amazing iGnite team, who are some of my dearest and best friends. Some people may think that mixing business with friendships/pleasure is an irresponsible idea, but for me, working with people whom I admire, respect, love and want to “do life with” is non-negotiable. My personal philosophy is that if I’m going to spend my precious time that God has gifted me to work, it will only be with work and people I love.

Due to schedule and routines, it is difficult to get to every leader’s class and beyond that, getting to know each leader on the same intimate level as I do is challenging. As a result, below is insight from everyone’s bio that sheds light as to why they naturally lift myself and others higher. I also encourage you to click on each of their names, which will take you to their personal iGnite page where more inspiration lies.

Sha Klatt

SHA KLATT   I’m Most Inspired By: My parents are my inspiration! They are in their 80’s and still lead very active lives. They continue to try new things, eat well, exercise daily, travel and most importantly are very involved with their family. They have wonderful relationships with their 3 children and 6 grandchildren, who all adore them. Any gathering is more fun if my parents are there!

Favorite Passage: May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.

paula-hPAULA HARNISH   Personal mantra: Keep calm and carry on!!

My Favorite quote, from the book, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz:

1. Be impeccable with your word
2. Don’t take anything personally
3. Don’t make assumption
4. Always do your best

Molly Daniels

MOLLY DANIELS  What Inspires Me Most: Like I mentioned above, I am inspired daily. Being one of the youngest on our team, I look up to all of the women I work with. I treasure and value their advice and take it to heart. The iGnite community inspires me. It is amazing getting to teach women from all different walks of life. I learn something new from them every day. My parents, who have been happily married for over 30 years, inspire me in a new way now that I am married. I seek their wisdom. And lastly, but not least, God amazes me and blesses me every single day. He calls us to serve, love and share, and I feel like I am doing just that in iGnite.

The Best Advice I’ve Been Given: My dad has always told me “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”

Kathleen Parker

KATHLEEN PARKER   What Inspires Me Most: Staying strong and healthy is the greatest gift we can give ourselves. I believe that if we make fitness a part of our lifestyle, it becomes increasingly easy to LIVE and be well. I am truly inspired every day by the men and women I am blessed to train, and strive each day to make a positive impact on their lives. This life God has blessed me with just gets better every year! I look forward to each day as a new adventure, just as my father does. I am truly enjoying the “ride” and can’t wait to see where He takes me next!

My Favorite Quote: “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” — George Eliot

babe-bio-4KATHLEEN “BABE” KEAHEY   Who Inspires Me Most: My mom and dad. My mom inspires me to always be true to myself. She is the most unique and caring person and is never afraid to be who she is -which can be a rare quality to find in this world. My dad because of his incredible patience and optimism. He had to deal with not only my mom, but three girls – that is a lot of women to handle in one house and I honestly don’t know how he does it! But he does it with so much kindness and patience, and for that, I thank him.

My Favorite Quote: “Let my faith be stronger than my fears.”

Jill Watts

JILL WATTS    Personal Mantra: “Everyday is a new day!” It’s pretty simple, but sometimes not so easy to live by. I have learned over the past few years as I have had some major changes in my life and as my children have become older (tweens and teens) that things just don’t always go as planned. You can’t waste too much time being stressed or upset. The day will come to an end no matter how hopeless it may seem at the time, and things always seem better in the morning. Each day you can have a fresh start with a new perspective. Teaching and participating in iGnite always helps me too!

Favorite Quote: “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning how to dance in the rain!”

iGnite_JessieJESSIE D’ANDREA  Favorite Quotes:“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and now grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” Isaiah 40: 31 / “Everyone smiles in the same language”

What Inspires Me Most: I am inspired by God’s creations: sunrises and sunsets, family, relationships, children, my job I could go on and on. But when I think about who inspires me the most, my sister, Jacky, always comes to mind first. Jacky is a God fearing women who loves her Savior first and her family second. She is a devoted mom to four beautiful children, a loving wife and daughter, and an inspiring big sister.

DelaineTeeple

DELAINE TEEPLE   Favorite Quote: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and you minds in Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:7

My iGnite Experience: When I got involved with iGnite 6 years ago, my light began to fully shine again after the accident. My love and appreciation for the outdoors was rekindled. The positive and inspiring environment that iGnite provides led me out of my comfort zone and into a much more exciting way of living. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be on this team as well as learn from all of the amazing women in iGnite.

betty_640px

BETTY CUNNINGHAM   The Best Advice I’ve Been Given: “Look up.” Between carpools and the crazy pace of having 10 children, my mother would pull things out of the air to make us think, especially when we were arguing over things like who had to ride in the “very back” of the station wagon. One of the things she said that has stayed with me is: “Now just think about this, what if God had decided not to share. There would be nothing. No people, no cars, no bikes, no schools, and not even the sun or the moon and the stars. Nothing.”

Personal Mantra: I think I can, I think I can

Amy Younkman

AMY YOUNKMAN   Personal Mantra: “Lord work through me, with me and in me.”

The Best Advice I’ve Been Given: Several years ago my mom, two sisters and I were on a “girls getaway” weekend during which my sister asked, “What is one piece of advice you would like to pass on to us, Mom?” I continue to reflect on my Mom’s reply: “Never look to someone else for your happiness. Find it for yourself.”

Amy Casual headshotAMY CHIBIB   What I Love: I believe life is a delicate balance! I have found that joy in helping others, which is why iGnite and my life and career coaching is the perfect balance for my life. I founded Creating Lives that Work and have passion for promoting people, products, and causes and helping others.

Favorite Quote: “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” — Joseph Pilates

Alli Phillips

ALLI PHILLIPS   What Inspires Me Most: My 5 wonderfully rambunctious and active children, Delaney age 16, Sally age 13, Lucy age 13, Ellie age 13, and Liam age 8, along with their iron-man-daddy, David, to whom I’ve been married 21 years, inspired “Backyard Fitness” and continue to inspire me, every. single. day.

Why Water?

Inspiration from the iGnite Archives

iGniteJuly10Journal_2016_yellow2

Point to Ponder:
Do you drink at least 1/2 your weight in ounces of water each day?

Sha Klatt

by Sha Klatt

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! How many times have we all heard this? We know we should drink at least 1/2 our body weight in ounces of water each day and it’s actually more important than you may think. Recently, I have heard several scary stories related to dehydration. Five people in our community, ranging in ages from 16-60 lost consciousness and some were seriously injured when they fell, leaving them hospitalized and placed on IV’s for several days, ALL because of dehydration.

I have had three less-serious dehydration scares (but non-the-less painful) of my own. In the past several years, I have had more and more headaches. Last year I had three unbelievable migraines that sent me to the emergency room for very expensive headache relief. I tried to figure out what was triggering the migraines. A glass of wine? A margarita? The high altitude of an airplane flight?

Finally, I realized the common thread… all of these activities were dehydrating. After an 8-week experiment, I have become a HYDRATION ADVOCATE! I started paying attention to my water intake, making sure I was actually getting the recommended daily dose, and lo and behold, I haven’t had one headache since! I can have a glass of wine or a margarita and not get a headache, as long as it’s accompanied by a large glass of water. Now, when I feel a headache coming on I start drinking water and POOF, the headache is gone. It’s so simple, yet magical! Plus, I really do feel so much better when I’m properly hydrated.

Staying hydrated is such a tremendously important topic that I am challenging you to pay extra attention to your water (not tea, soda or coffee) consumption, especially in this scorching summer heat. I promise you will be doing your body a huge favor! As a reminder, here are the proven benefits of water and adequate hydration:

  1. Weight loss
  2. Healthy skin
  3. Fights infection
  4. Rids body of toxins
  5. Heart healthy
  6. Reduces joint pain and arthritis
  7. Boosts Energy
  8. Prevent Constipation
  9. Improves Productivity
  10. Helps fight cancer (science is now telling us that cancer cells look for dehydrated cells to live in and spread)

So, let’s start each day with a giant glass of water and don’t forget to drink a LOT of water before, during and after you iGnite. Make sure you get at least the daily recommendation of 1/2 your body weight in ounces, and avoid using the grocery store purchased water bottles, as our landfills are filled with plastic, (which takes 450 to 1000 years to decompose!) and is actually very difficult and costly to recycle. Instead, refill a reusable water bottle with filtered water, and in the event you need a new and fun water bottle to help you drink all of the water, our 32 oz., pba free and wide-mouth water bottles (which means you can actually clean the inside of them!) have arrived! They come in three bright colors: turquoise, purple and clear. If interested, you can check them out and purchase in our online shop, HERE. Cheers to your glass of ice cold water and bottoms up!

We would love to hear how your water drinking is going and how great you feel! Join in the conversation…comment below!

Action Item:
Start each day with a giant glass of water and drink a LOT of water throughout the day as well as before, during and after exercising. Make sure to drink a minimum of half your body weight in ounces of water each day.

We go there for “family dinner” most Sunday nights and love catching up with our grown kids lives, sitting out by the fountain eating chips and Bob Armstrong dip. The Patio is in a classic, beautiful Mexican style with great ambiance and lots of fun energy. I even bring blankets and extra jackets for everyone if its chilly outside because we only want to eat on the patio! My husband and I often share the chicken fajita tacos, and my kids love the tostada compuestas!

Alli Phillips

Alli’s Pick:

FoodHeads – a true austin original. It is a fun, funky cafe with ample outdoor seating “on the porch” and “in the yard.”

Roots:
I was lucky enough to grow up here in Austin. My mother went to the old Austin High and was one of the first students to go to Travis High when it opened. 🙂

Family life:
My husband, Russell, although born in New Hampshire, also grew up here in Leander. We met at UT during a summer internship selling books door to door. (A whole other story – ha!) We have two boys – Isaac is 9, and Austin will be 8 in May.

Work life:
In my previous life, I worked at Dell selling servers and storage systems to universities (mostly) in the Chicago area. But have to say I love “retirement”! My husband and kids keep me busy, and when they don’t, the school or other friends/family members do.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience…
iGnite has taught me how to swim! Okay, in more ways than one. Although I do completely credit Sha for any skill I now have in the pool, I can say that swimming is something we all do in everyday life. Sometimes we feel great and can swim hard – sometimes we struggle to come up for air just to make it to the other side. But, the best part about iGnite is who you “swim” with – whether it be at Mecca, TreeHouse or the JCC – it is a wonderful group of ladies to know and be friends with.

I’m most inspired by…
Many people inspire me: friends with large families, friends going through tough times with a smile, teachers who work so hard to teach all different kids in their class, volunteers/philanthropists who never stop the work….what they all have in common is work ethic. They don’t wait around for something to happen. They are the reason things happen! Nothing inspires me more than someone willing to work hard to make a difference in their lives and others.

I’m looking forward to…
Right now we are in the middle of building a house around the corner from where we live. We are pretty excited about seeing it come together and are looking forward to moving in sometime in May. 🙂

If I were a pair of shoes…
They would have to be a bedazzled pair of comfortable tennis shoes. I’m not sure I can properly explain that, but I am a casual person who also likes to dress up and dance the night away.

A Balanced Approach to Resolutions

iGnite - fireworksHere’s to a New Year with New Beginnings and — Balance!  This year, let’s think about a more simplified approach to resolutions and try to make those resolutions realistic and sustainable. One way to do this is to prioritize your goals as you come up with ‘Less is More’ resolutions.  When we focus on doing less and doing it well, instead of doing more and assuming it’s better, we’re less scattered, more deliberate, less stressed, and more present. Our leaders are sharing their ‘Less is More’ Resolutions to encourage a more balanced lifestyle for 2016. Enjoy and be inspired!

Neissa Springmann

Less Caffeine, More Water

“Rather than use water, wholesome food and proper hydration to boost my energy, when my energy is low I drink MORE caffeine. I absolutely know better, and when I do eliminate or decrease my caffeine conssumption and only drink water, I feel amazing!” – Neissa

Less Thinking and Over-Thinking, More Prayer

“I like to think of myself as a faithful person, but waaaay too often (almost always), I do not turn all of my questions and decisions over to God in prayer. I’m not a worrier or really an over-thinker, but I am an independant minded do-er, so too often I don’t include God in my daily decisions. I want every minute of my day to be directed by God and in order for that to happen, I need to include him in all decisions- big and small.” -Neissa

Less Spending, More Giving

“Having recently moved I purged a lot, however I am still amazed at how much excess I still have and frankly, I don’t need, and will likely never use. There are so many people who are in great need of basic things, all of which I have plenty of. Therefore, in 2016 I am going to make it a priority to spend less on “things” and give more.” – Neissa

Less Judgement, More Love and Compassion-

“Shamefully, I am amazed at how quickly I will judge someone or make an assumption about them when I don’t even know them! To be called to love one another means that we love despite flaws and having a ton myself, I certainly want people to love me and my family despite ours.” -Neissa

Kathleen Parker

Less Cooking & Cleaning, More time on the Lake

Less Collecting Stuff (Clutter), More quality time with friends and family

Less worrying about getting everything done, More time traveling with friends and family

Less focusing on wasteful errands, More time BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS, of course that happens a lot on the lake!

“I am at a phase of life where enjoying every day is a requirement!
Each day is such a gift.  I am not waisting one more in 2016.” – Kathleen

Less time thinking about being active, More time being active.

“I’m trying to do something active everyday.  It usually helps if I get it done first thing, but a 20 minute walk in the evening works too.  It really makes a difference for me to do something active everyday.” -Sha

Molly Daniels

Less time spent on technology, More quality time with my husband

“My husband and I both work from home, so it’s hard to “turn work off”. We are aiming to do our technology turn-off every night for at least one hour so we can spend quality time together.” -Molly

More yoga, Less cross training

“Thanks to Amy Younkman teaching her wonderful Vinyasa Yoga class at Treehouse Yoga, I now have found a wonderful class I really enjoy and get excited to go to once a week. It reminds me to slow down and take time for rest – I don’t always have to be going 90 miles per hour.” – Molly

Amy Younkman

Amy Younkman

Less time using technology, More time using my own thoughts.

“In 2016, I plan to tune out the need to constantly be “plugged in” to technology and instead tune into the “Amy app” where I am checking in with my own internal wisdom and guidance.” – Amy

Less time talking, More time listening

Less time complaining, More time being grateful

Less eating out, More cooking at home

“It is so easy with the multitude of after-school activities and sports for our kids to just eat out on the way home instead of prioritizing a home-cooked meal and calm evening together.  I know that everyone makes healthier choices at home, and I enjoy cooking for the family.” -Delaine

Less multi-tasking, More being present with my family

“With a little more prioritizing during the school day, I could get more done (or cut things out completely!) which will enable me to be free when the kids and my husband get home to enjoy my time with them and be present in the moment.” – Delaine

Stay Cool in the Pool: Swim Workout to Build Endurance

DSC_0139

Sha Klatt

Sha Klatt

We are in the glorious days of SPRING SWIMMING!  With the temperatures starting to rise, It is a wonderful time of year to be in the water.

“Swimming is amazing therapy, peace, tranquility and exhilaration…not to mention low-impact on joints as well as a great full body, head to toe workout,” says swimming leader Sha Klatt.  While we all know It’s important to cross train in our workouts, we might not always think of swimming as the perfect way to give joints and bones a break while creating long lean muscles from head to toe and incredible lung power. Well, it is!  Not to mention, you get to stay cool on those too-hot-for-a-jog days.

Not a regular swimmer? No problem. Sha has put together a fun summer swim workout that will keep your core temp down while you get toned from head to toe.

So, give your bones and joints a break, jump in and use this outline for your next workout!

“Stay Cool in the Pool”
Endurance-Building Swim Workout

As you get started with swimming, pace yourself: cut this workout in half and build up your endurance until you can complete the entire workout.

Become “one” with the water and let the water work it’s magic.  You’ll feel amazing when you’re finished!

Warm-up: 200m  Swim (8 lengths of a 25m pool)
Start with a body stretching warm-up in the water.  Swim your choice of strokes, but swim very slowly, reaching your arms out as far as they can go while you glide through the water. This helps lengthen your muscles and gives a good stretch.

500m Freestyle Pyramid:

  • 2 x 25m (2 lengths of the pool): Rest 20 secs after each 25m.  On the 2nd 25 swim a little faster (that’s how you “build”)
  • 2 x 50m (4 lengths):  Rest 30 secs after each 50m.  Increase your speed with each segment.
  • 2 x 100m (8 lengths of the pool): Rest 30 secs after each 100m.  A little bit faster now, and sprint the 2nd 100!
  • 2 x 50m (4 lengths):  Now you can start to pull back on your speed, rest 30 sec.
  • 2 x 25m (2 lengths):  This time slow it down and feel the power in each stroke, long glide.

400m Kick (lower body only):

  • With fins on and holding  kick board out in front of you, kick for 100m (4 lengths) of each kickdolphin kick (butterfly) for 25m, backstroke kick (flip over on your back) for 25m, freestyle kick for 25m, then remove fins for breaststroke kick for the last 25m.

300m Pull (upper body only):

  • Place a pull buoy between your legs and squeeze your them together tight.  Using your arms only, “pull” each stroke for 100m of backstroke, 100m of breaststroke and 100m of freestyle

200m Sprints:

  • Swim 4 X 50m of freestyle all out!  Rest 30 seconds after each 50m

200m Warm-Down:

  • 50m Ab kick: with fins on, turn around so your back is facing the direction you want to swim and pull your knees up into your chest like you are sitting in a chair with your head above water, calves along the top of the water. Using your abs to hold your torso up as you kick, lean slightly backwards at about a 45 degree angle while you kick backwards with your fins, completing 2 lengths of the pool
  • 50m Swim slow, your choice of stroke: stretch out
  • 100m Relaxing side kick with fins and kick board

Hi Everyone,

For some reason I got off to a slow start this re-boot go around. So after not being as on top of things as I had hoped and letting a day get away without doing all the steps, today is day 3 and I’m finally getting into my re-boot groove!

Got day 3 off to good start with hot lemon water instead of coffee. Ironically, I think my energy was much higher today!

On day 1, I had a pretty big headache. Day 2 — a milder headache. I hadn’t slept that well either, so I decided to make sure to check everything off the list for day 3 to see if it helped. So far, so good! Last night I took my first epsom salt soak, turned off technology and slept like a baby.

I awoke this third day feeling way more energetic. In fact, I have felt amazingly energetic all day. I’m thinking the lack of coffee in the morning is actually giving me more energy, because I’m not getting that dip that I usually feel when the caffeine runs out on me. Whoa! I hate the thought of giving up my morning Joe, but it may be really worth it!!!

I had my lemon water and a KIND bar to start my day.  KIND bars really help me when I need quick energy on the run; I usually eat half before a workout and the other half afterwards.  After my iGnite workout for the day I fixed up a green smoothie with peaches.

I had to run some errands this morning so I went ahead and fixed a tall iced apple cider vinegar and water with stevia and sipped on that around town.  Meal 3 was a delicious ruby trout salad from Z Tejas.  I’m pleased to say that I didn’t have my mid-afternoon slump today, but I did start getting a slight headache.

Dinner: a yummy filling power bowl from Maudie's.

I don’t usually eat out twice a day, but I had an out-of-town guest and that’s what we ended up doing. Soooo for dinner I had a power bowl with shredded chicken at Maudie’s. I avoided the chips and salsa and left feeling very satisfied.

I got my cranberry water ready for day 4 and headed to the tub for a relaxing soak and some spinal twisting before another great night’s sleep!
