Life Without Coffee

I love coffee. I love the smell, I love the taste, I love the way it makes me feel. Some of my fondest memories involve a cup of coffee. I love coffee.

A long long time ago, before Starbucks was on every corner in America, the first place I would visit upon my return to my Homeland, was the original Starbucks on the corner of 1st and Pike in Seattle. Coffee and I go way back.

Breakfast of champions

As much as I love coffee, I know in my heart of hearts, the effect of caffeine on my digestive system is not always positive and I knew that I needed a reboot away from caffeine and the one I love.

The first day of the reboot was fantastic for about the first six hours. Then…..the headache, I needed a nap, and please somebody bring me some chips!

Day two and three were miserable. I began having bad thoughts about the reboot and anyone associated with it. I was in a complete fog and my brain was shutting down. Help me, I’m melting…. I must admit that I had a Starbucks on Friday and I loved it. The good news is though, I did not fall completely off the wagon and I have made it another two days without caffeine.

Today, I felt great. I felt light all day long and my brain was functioning at full capacity. I started the day with the breakfast of champions: Oatmeal with strawberries and almond milk, and of course hot lemon water.

I caught a flight to Dallas and had a working lunch with a take-out salad and I even made a bottle of cranberry water for the trip.

Dinner I shared a Maudie’s power bowl and fruit salad by Kyle.

I have learned that I can live without coffee and that my body is actually thanking me for the reboot.

Meg’s Day 6 | 10-Day Body Re-boot

The Re-boot Cleanse has been a bit different for me this time around. Last time I jumped in with both feet and felt great after the 10 days! In fact, I felt so great, that many of the practices, I have maintained. I continue to have my lemon water twice a day and I really stay away from dairy and wheat as much as I can during the week. I also was much more conscious about how much water I drank in a day…I might not have always had enough, but so much better than in my past. However, I did bring my coffee back into my morning ritual, the evening cocktail returned, and then the chocolate.

Therefore, when I looked at the cleanse this time around and saw that it fell right when my daughter had her birthday (how was I going to resist Red Velvet Cake in the house?), I wanted to really pick apart how my body responded to different foods. Therefore, I actually gave up coffee two weeks ago! I didn’t have a headache, which I was excited about, but today as my hubby pulled into Starbucks and it was starting to sprinkle outside and we were heading to my son’s football game, I decided to order a coffee. I enjoyed every second of it! I then began to realize that I had a stomachache and I was starting to sweat and I made the connection: “Caffeine doesn’t make me feel good, so let it go!” I really think coffee is no longer part of my ritual, but I might enjoy the occasional cup, knowing that it doesn’t make me feel good, but that it tastes so good. So I didn’t really miss the coffee and obviously my body doesn’t want it, but SUGAR is another story!  I am on day 6 of no sugar and I want it so badly! I am going to watch how I feel when I finally give it a try, but I really would like to make it for the 10 days, so stay tuned because this is going to take lots of will power.

I have loved my water and Cranberry Cocktail for the past 6 months. Over the next few weeks, I will continue to subtract and add back each of these vices that are apart of the Reboot and pay attention to which ones are my vices, which ones my body doesn’t like and hopefully reset my body physically and mentally, so that I can find a balance in it all!

Neissa’s Day 5 | 10-Day Body Re-boot

I can’t tell you how thankful I am to be past the first days of our re-boot cleanse! For the past several months I’ve done a poor job of self-care. Aside from iGniting, my diet hasn’t been balanced, I have not had my morning lemon water (which I’ve done for years), I haven’t stayed hydrated, and I’ve abused caffeine so I could burn the candle at both ends. Needless to say, I have not been my healthiest, which was manifesting into weird stomach pains.  The timing for self-care was perfect. I knew the cleansing from caffeine would be the most difficult for me, and it definitely has been.

On Day 1 I had a headache and found it difficult to focus. My brain was foggy, and I knew that was not a good sign, as my addiction was real. iGniting in our classes, however, did help but at the end of Day 1 I was the most exhausted I’ve been in months and was hopeful a good night’s rest would help.  It did.

Day 2 was better, but my headache lingered, as did my inability to focus. Starting my morning with Dance Fit & Zumba with Betty did help with my energy, and the way I attempted to combat the fogginess was with cranberry water, which I take everywhere with me. A daily Kombucha is also my treat (see pic with computer).

On Day 3 I woke up with a sore throat and that dang headache again, but that’s when I learned that everyone else was experiencing the same symptoms as a result of the ragweed and mold in the air.

I did comment at our Mt. Bonnell workout with Molly that “who needs caffeine when they have iGnite?!”  Molly’s class gave me the morning energy jolt that I needed, and who can beat the view at Mt. Bonnell!  My focus that day was much better, but because of the cool temps I really wanted a cup of coffee!!! And, everywhere I looked, someone had a cup of coffee. There’s no doubt that if someone is solely wanted to make money, the coffee business is the one to go in because everyone is drinking it… and I was wishing I was with them!

By day 4, I finally began feeling like myself. I didn’t have a headache and my body felt good. My body was cleansing and I knew it was a result of high-quality food and adequate hydration.

Then, on Day 5 I felt awesome!  I had an outstanding iGnite workout with Kathleen and my body felt light, quick and fast. I then headed to Daily Juice and had them create the Perfect Springtime Smoothie  for me, however I used hemp protein powder instead of egg white protein powder. It was delish!

Lunch: a coconut yogurt bowl with gluten-free granola & fruit

Lunch: a coconut yogurt bowl with gluten-free granola & fruit

For lunch I enjoyed a coconut yogurt bowl with gluten-free granola and fruit. It was plain yogurt so I used a drop of Vanilla Stevia to sweeten it.

Then, for dinner, we headed to the Whole Foods at the Domain where I devoured Kale Salad, Quinoa turkey balls and beets.(see pic) Then, of course, my sweet tooth kicked in and I treated myself to a Paleo Muffin which satisfied my craving while Russell and the children shared a slice of red velvet cake.

We ate outside on the picnic tables where we enjoyed several hours of the nice temperatures while the kids played.

What I found the most difficult about Day 5 was the feeling of deprivation. I very badly wanted to treat myself to a glass of wine and chocolate. And, while the muffin was good and it did help, I would’ve much rather had a slice of cake and/or a glass of wine!

Because I’ve eliminated caffeine, I have had no problem going to bed when I need to and getting the 7-9 hours of sleep, which is exactly what I’ve needed!

On the other hand, I haven’t had good luck with my Epsom salt bath or drinking my lemon water at night, but now that the weekend is upon us and my husband Russell is back in town giving me help at night with the kiddos, I’m going to make it happen tonight with a few candles, my hot lemon water and a SUCCESS Magazine — my favorite 🙂

Sha’s Day 3: 10-Day Body Re-Boot Detox

Hi Everyone,

For some reason I got off to a slow start this re-boot go around. So after not being as on top of things as I had hoped and letting a day get away without doing all the steps, today is day 3 and I’m finally getting into my re-boot groove!

Got day 3 off to good start with hot lemon water instead of coffee. Ironically, I think my energy was much higher today!

Got day 3 off to good start with hot lemon water instead of coffee. Ironically, I think my energy was much higher today!

On day 1, I had a pretty big headache. Day 2 — a milder headache. I hadn’t slept that well either, so I decided to make sure to check everything off the list for day 3 to see if it helped. So far, so good! Last night I took my first epsom salt soak, turned off technology and slept like a baby.

I awoke this third day feeling way more energetic. In fact, I have felt amazingly energetic all day. I’m thinking the lack of coffee in the morning is actually giving me more energy, because I’m not getting that dip that I usually feel when the caffeine runs out on me. Whoa! I hate the thought of giving up my morning Joe, but it may be really worth it!!!

I had my lemon water and a KIND bar to start my day.  KIND bars really help me when I need quick energy on the run; I usually eat half before a workout and the other half afterwards.  After my iGnite workout for the day I fixed up a green smoothie with peaches.

I had to run some errands this morning so I went ahead and fixed a tall iced apple cider vinegar and water with stevia and sipped on that around town.  Meal 3 was a delicious ruby trout salad from Z Tejas.  I’m pleased to say that I didn’t have my mid-afternoon slump today, but I did start getting a slight headache.

Dinner: a yummy filling power bowl from Maudie's.

I don’t usually eat out twice a day, but I had an out-of-town guest and that’s what we ended up doing. Soooo for dinner I had a power bowl with shredded chicken at Maudie’s. I avoided the chips and salsa and left feeling very satisfied.

I got my cranberry water ready for day 4 and headed to the tub for a relaxing soak and some spinal twisting before another great night’s sleep!
