A Decade of Dedication

octweeklyheader_1_2016_withborder

As we continue to celebrate our birthday, we are highlighting the women who know iGnite better than anyone as they have spent 10 years of fun, friendship & fitness with this welcoming community. The “Fab 5” were part of Founder Neissa Springmann’s first class in October 2006 and are still here reaping the benefits of the whole-self approach to fitness and life. iGnite is beyond blessed to have them as cheerleaders and mentors for our members!

The Fab 5 (l to r): Kathleen Parker, Cathy Johnson, Becky Heiser, Cindy Haeglin & Louise Pincoffs

Four of these amazing women are passing along some of the inspiration and great times that have come from being apart of the iGnite family…

Cindy Haeglin

IMG_7077.JPGMy earliest memory of iGnite… is of being with Neissa on the trail across from Austin High. We drug our big blue balls everywhere and skipped up and down the trail in the dark. Such fun we had!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through iGnite over the years…iGnite has taught me to love where I am in my life. Things are constantly changing. Sometimes I feel good about my body and sometimes I don’t. I no longer hyper focus but instead, just do the best I can and am thankful for all my blessings.

My favorite iGnite classes… are swimming and yoga. Swimming is a great workout when your joints start to get creaky. I think I will be able to do water exercise of some type for the rest of my life. Yoga is so good for stretching my body and calming my mind.

Cathy Johnson

ignite-cathy-oswalt-003-1I describe iGnite as…a nice group of women, of various ages, professions and experiences, who like to take care of themselves and enjoy exercising.

My earliest memory of iGnite…is being at the original location, which was beautiful, on Town Lake. All seasons were nice, the leaves in the fall, the steam coming off of the water in the winter and the first hint of green in the spring. It was a wonderful spot to relax after our workout. We also had to bring our own equipment, in an iGnite bag, which included a jump rope, weights and a big red utter ball.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through iGnite over the years…to keep on moving

My favorite iGnite class… is Betty’s dance class because it’s fun to dance! I love Betty and we all try to keep up with our “Rangerette.”

Kathleen Parker

I describe iGnite as…a positive outdoor fitness and wellness experience for women!! It is relational, uplifting, exciting, comforting, exhilarating, and so so FUN!!

dh000002-1My earliest memory of iGnite… is Neissa describing it when I was at her Westwood Kickboxing class. She was so excited to start a spiritual and positive outdoor experience for women, and all I could say was, “I AM IN!!” Then our first week started Monday, October 3rd, 2006. Our small group met at 6 am in the dark on an old slab down by the 1st st. bridge that was once a bridge barrier. We all had a big utter ball, and the wind would blow and we would run to catch our balls since we were literally located 5 feet from the lake! We used to bounce our big balls down the trail in the dark and people would just stop in amazement and clear the path for us. Then I remember we had a really cold first winter and one of our new participants was told to bring gloves, and she showed up in garden gloves and her fingers pretty much froze. We did not see her back again until Springtime!! For that first year, Neissa would literally hand us this brightly colored sheet of beautiful facts and things for us to think about and fill out for the week!! I read every word of every page and saved every weekly sheet until we moved in 2010!! So many great memories from ’06!!

My favorite iGnite class… is of course, LAKE ESCAPE!! This is where women are transformed into adrenalin rushing kids and have more fun than aloud to have on land!!
My second favorite class is POWER UP! I am so passionate about lifting weights to stay strong and bone healthy!! There is nothing more exhilarating than finishing a challenging weight/sprint workout!!!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned from iGnite… is that RELATIONSHIPS are THE most important thing in life!! They bring you joy, comfort, happiness, warmth, love and a feeling of belonging. As one of our young adults told me, “Kathleen, have you ever seen a hearse with a tailgate hitch”?? I love that–nothing is as important as my relationship with God, my family and my friends.  Of course, the number 2 thing I have learned from iGnite is to HAVE FUN EVERY DAY–and get that fun rush of adrenalin in!

Louise Pincoffs

ignite-yoga-018I describe iGnite as… an all inclusive health motivator. Mind, body, and spirit!

My earliest memory of iGnite…is meeting at town lake across from Seaholm and playing all along trail with friends.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through iGnite over the years…stay positive, give it time, and surround yourself with friends who have those priorities!

My favorite iGnite class…Amy’s yoga and Molly’s cardio are in a tie! They are a weekly gift to myself.

My favorite memory of iGnite… Fun social gatherings because we have a chance to get to know each other better!

Point to Ponder:
Who lifts you higher and who do you lift higher?

iGnite Neissa

by Neissa Brown Springmann

With an unbelievable one hundred and five of us in attendance at our tenth birthday bash on Thursday night (crushing all previous party attendance!), all weekend I have contemplated the conversations, smiling faces and old and new friendships that filled the room. It was a humbling, exciting and inspiring evening that will be difficult top. While I continued to reflect, what keeps coming to mind is the quote listed in the picture above, by Oprah, “Surround yourself only with people who are going to lift you higher.” This describes the iGnite community, made up of both our leaders and members.

iGnite’s official birthday isn’t until October, but in addition to celebrating in a variety of ways, one thing we will commemorate during the next six weeks are the people in our lives who have and continue to lift us higher.

For the sake of today’s journal, I’m starting with our amazing iGnite team, who are some of my dearest and best friends. Some people may think that mixing business with friendships/pleasure is an irresponsible idea, but for me, working with people whom I admire, respect, love and want to “do life with” is non-negotiable. My personal philosophy is that if I’m going to spend my precious time that God has gifted me to work, it will only be with work and people I love.

Due to schedule and routines, it is difficult to get to every leader’s class and beyond that, getting to know each leader on the same intimate level as I do is challenging. As a result, below is insight from everyone’s bio that sheds light as to why they naturally lift myself and others higher. I also encourage you to click on each of their names, which will take you to their personal iGnite page where more inspiration lies.

Sha Klatt

SHA KLATT   I’m Most Inspired By: My parents are my inspiration! They are in their 80’s and still lead very active lives. They continue to try new things, eat well, exercise daily, travel and most importantly are very involved with their family. They have wonderful relationships with their 3 children and 6 grandchildren, who all adore them. Any gathering is more fun if my parents are there!

Favorite Passage: May today there be peace within.
May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.
May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.

paula-hPAULA HARNISH   Personal mantra: Keep calm and carry on!!

My Favorite quote, from the book, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz:

1. Be impeccable with your word
2. Don’t take anything personally
3. Don’t make assumption
4. Always do your best

Molly Daniels

MOLLY DANIELS  What Inspires Me Most: Like I mentioned above, I am inspired daily. Being one of the youngest on our team, I look up to all of the women I work with. I treasure and value their advice and take it to heart. The iGnite community inspires me. It is amazing getting to teach women from all different walks of life. I learn something new from them every day. My parents, who have been happily married for over 30 years, inspire me in a new way now that I am married. I seek their wisdom. And lastly, but not least, God amazes me and blesses me every single day. He calls us to serve, love and share, and I feel like I am doing just that in iGnite.

The Best Advice I’ve Been Given: My dad has always told me “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”

Kathleen Parker

KATHLEEN PARKER   What Inspires Me Most: Staying strong and healthy is the greatest gift we can give ourselves. I believe that if we make fitness a part of our lifestyle, it becomes increasingly easy to LIVE and be well. I am truly inspired every day by the men and women I am blessed to train, and strive each day to make a positive impact on their lives. This life God has blessed me with just gets better every year! I look forward to each day as a new adventure, just as my father does. I am truly enjoying the “ride” and can’t wait to see where He takes me next!

My Favorite Quote: “It is never too late to be what you might have been.” — George Eliot

babe-bio-4KATHLEEN “BABE” KEAHEY   Who Inspires Me Most: My mom and dad. My mom inspires me to always be true to myself. She is the most unique and caring person and is never afraid to be who she is -which can be a rare quality to find in this world. My dad because of his incredible patience and optimism. He had to deal with not only my mom, but three girls – that is a lot of women to handle in one house and I honestly don’t know how he does it! But he does it with so much kindness and patience, and for that, I thank him.

My Favorite Quote: “Let my faith be stronger than my fears.”

Jill Watts

JILL WATTS    Personal Mantra: “Everyday is a new day!” It’s pretty simple, but sometimes not so easy to live by. I have learned over the past few years as I have had some major changes in my life and as my children have become older (tweens and teens) that things just don’t always go as planned. You can’t waste too much time being stressed or upset. The day will come to an end no matter how hopeless it may seem at the time, and things always seem better in the morning. Each day you can have a fresh start with a new perspective. Teaching and participating in iGnite always helps me too!

Favorite Quote: “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning how to dance in the rain!”

iGnite_JessieJESSIE D’ANDREA  Favorite Quotes:“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and now grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” Isaiah 40: 31 / “Everyone smiles in the same language”

What Inspires Me Most: I am inspired by God’s creations: sunrises and sunsets, family, relationships, children, my job I could go on and on. But when I think about who inspires me the most, my sister, Jacky, always comes to mind first. Jacky is a God fearing women who loves her Savior first and her family second. She is a devoted mom to four beautiful children, a loving wife and daughter, and an inspiring big sister.

DelaineTeeple

DELAINE TEEPLE   Favorite Quote: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and you minds in Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 4:7

My iGnite Experience: When I got involved with iGnite 6 years ago, my light began to fully shine again after the accident. My love and appreciation for the outdoors was rekindled. The positive and inspiring environment that iGnite provides led me out of my comfort zone and into a much more exciting way of living. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be on this team as well as learn from all of the amazing women in iGnite.

betty_640px

BETTY CUNNINGHAM   The Best Advice I’ve Been Given: “Look up.” Between carpools and the crazy pace of having 10 children, my mother would pull things out of the air to make us think, especially when we were arguing over things like who had to ride in the “very back” of the station wagon. One of the things she said that has stayed with me is: “Now just think about this, what if God had decided not to share. There would be nothing. No people, no cars, no bikes, no schools, and not even the sun or the moon and the stars. Nothing.”

Personal Mantra: I think I can, I think I can

Amy Younkman

AMY YOUNKMAN   Personal Mantra: “Lord work through me, with me and in me.”

The Best Advice I’ve Been Given: Several years ago my mom, two sisters and I were on a “girls getaway” weekend during which my sister asked, “What is one piece of advice you would like to pass on to us, Mom?” I continue to reflect on my Mom’s reply: “Never look to someone else for your happiness. Find it for yourself.”

Amy Casual headshotAMY CHIBIB   What I Love: I believe life is a delicate balance! I have found that joy in helping others, which is why iGnite and my life and career coaching is the perfect balance for my life. I founded Creating Lives that Work and have passion for promoting people, products, and causes and helping others.

Favorite Quote: “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” — Joseph Pilates

Alli Phillips

ALLI PHILLIPS   What Inspires Me Most: My 5 wonderfully rambunctious and active children, Delaney age 16, Sally age 13, Lucy age 13, Ellie age 13, and Liam age 8, along with their iron-man-daddy, David, to whom I’ve been married 21 years, inspired “Backyard Fitness” and continue to inspire me, every. single. day.

Favorite Quote: What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

Springtime in Austin is patio weather! With so many visitors in town this week and throughout the spring, a little guidance might help to find the best patio options.  Here to help, our iGnite team is sharing their favorite patios around town for eating, drinking, getting together with friends and enjoying the beautiful weather.

Molly Daniels

Molly’s Picks:

El Alma – love their patio for a Saturday afternoon margarita with friends!

Perla’s – Best champagne cocktail! I love the crab wedge salad, and the hushpuppies are a bonus too! Perfect date night spot.

Polvo’s – YUM! Fish fajitas are the BEST!

Sha Klatt

Sha’s Pick:

My husband and I love the patio at Matt’s El Rancho.

We go there for “family dinner” most Sunday nights and love catching up with our grown kids lives, sitting out by the fountain eating chips and Bob Armstrong dip. The Patio is in a classic, beautiful Mexican style with great ambiance and lots of fun energy. I even bring blankets and extra jackets for everyone if its chilly outside because we only want to eat on the patio! My husband and I often share the chicken fajita tacos, and my kids love the tostada compuestas!

Alli Phillips

Alli’s Pick:

FoodHeads – a true austin original. It is a fun, funky cafe with ample outdoor seating “on the porch” and “in the yard.”
Delish sandwiches, soups and salads and the best home made pickles on the planet. They serve unique contemporary twists on old classics with locally sourced ingredients .
LOVE this place!

There are plenty wonderful Austin restaurant patios where you can enjoy a nice meal outside and glass of wine. While I could name many, my two favorites are ZAX (as seen in Betty’s article) and

The Grove Wine Bar (Bee Caves location) – Set under the branches of a beautiful and giant oak tree, the patio is covered with lighting which creates the quintessential ambiance for a casual and fun meal with girlfriends or your significant other. And, they have amazing wines and delicious pizza, which certainly doesn’t hurt!

Check out our team’s favorite socially-conscious companies to buy from and charities to give to this holiday season:

Raven + Lily

Raven + Lily“The whole mission of this beautiful jewelry, clothing and home goods line is to ’empower women through design.’  I have many of their pieces of jewelry and clothing, and I LOVE to give them as gifts because they’re not only beautiful but support such an incredible cause and an unbelievable organization — that way, everyone that gets one of their items then looks into what they’re doing and sees the big picture 🙂 Check it out at http://www.ravenandlily.com
-Catherine Sanderson

Teen and Family Services

Teen & Family Services“The charity of my choice this Christmas season is Teen and Family Services, a Texas-based nonprofit that fills such an important gap for families searching for answers.  It’s a peer-based recovery support program for adolescents and their families who are suffering from the harmful effects of teen substance abuse.  You can donate or learn more about their holistic approach at teenandfamilyservices.org.”
Betty Cunningham

Marbridge Ranch

Marbridge“My favorite charity is Marbridge Ranch, because it’s just a happy place, filled with kind people —  staff, residents and volunteers. It offers a safe and comfortable home for many cognitively-challenged adults, and the programs at Marbridge enrich lives daily, by providing activities, skills training for jobs, and community. It is the place where you go to give, and you leave filled up…they turn it around, and you become the recipient of warm welcomes, friendly hellos and hugs, and just the most contagious, amazing smiles that will absolutely light you up. I love the place, and I love to support it! To support Marbridge Ranch during the holidays you can donate or become a short or long term volunteer.  You can find these opportunities at www.marbridge.org
Cary Fyfe

Lush

Lush-Logo“I also like Lush for great handmade skin care and body products and they have wonderful project called “Charity Pot,” 100% of the proceeds from sales of this cream is donated to small, grassroots organizations working in the areas of environmental conservation, animal welfare and human rights. Learn more about this great product at www.lushusa.com.”
Alli Phillips

Buy Fair Trade

“Buying “Fair Trade” products and gifts (chocolate, coffee, wine, etc.) means that the workers and artisans around the world that grew/created/manufactured the food, goods, or gift items you purchase were paid a fair “living wage.” This is why “fair trade” goods are sometimes more expensive, but also why it’s so important to support these companies.  Just look for “Fair Trade” signage as you shop around this holiday season.”
Alli Phillips

Altar’d State

altard-state“I love this store for three reasons:  1).  They have super cute clothes  2) . They have affordable clothes  3).  They are service-oriented, and they donate 1% of all sales to local and international charities. They sponsor high-risk children in Peru, and they support their employees by sponsoring volunteer hours.  To date, they have volunteered over 1600 hours! Check out their clothing and their mission at  www.altardstate.com.
Neissa Springmann

Victory School Uganda

kamukamaLogo“My good friends and Austin natives, Jeanne and Lew Little, founded the Victory School upon traveling to Uganda and witnessing first-hand the poverty and absolute practical and educational needs of the children in a remote village in Western Uganda. They founded the Kumakuma Foundation as a means to partner with the Victory School in Uganda and help provide the children with a quality education and a bright future.  What I love about the Victory School is that for just $25 a month, I am able to sponsor a child, which provides tuition, books, supplies, a uniform, 2 meals a day, access to clean water and life skills.  As a sponsor, I receive pictures and letters from my child and am able to write him as well.  Find out more about this beautiful foundation at www.victoryschooluganda.org.”

Point to Ponder:
Do you have a difficult time accepting the unknowns of your life?
by Neissa Brown Springmann

by Neissa Brown Springmann

While I am certainly not trying to compare my dancing abilities to Betty Cunningham (our iGnite dance leader extraordinaire), I love a dance party!…especially with girlfriends, which is exactly what took place this weekend during Run to the Sun – the overnight relay race from Enchanted Rock to Camp Mabry benefiting Beyond Batten Disease FoundationExhilarating, very hard, hysterical, boundless joy, exhaustingand absolute fun are some of the words that describe Team iGnite’s experience.  It’s actually very difficult to articulate the unforgettable event so I’m not sure I’ll do it much justice in writing. Maybe saying that staying awake for twenty-nine hours, still having a smile on my face and in my heart, and wishing I could do it again next weekend says enough?

In addition to witnessing the awe-inspiring power of community as well as countless displays of extraordinary courage and strength, there were two specific moments that made a sizeable impact and still have me thinking.

The first was during my relay leg, around 1:30 a.m on Hamilton Pool Road.  It was of course dark so I wore reflective gear, blinky lights and a head light.  Even though I knew my run was difficult and hilly,  my head light only allowed me to see about fifteen steps in front and therefore I couldn’t anticipate what was coming up until it was upon me. Also, because I desperately wanted to mentally prepare for what lie ahead and feel like I had some control, I often times tried manipulating my head light to see if I could get greater range, but it was always a waste of effort. Therefore, I had to alter my mindset, accept the unknown while not giving up, and accept taking it one step at a time.  It was blind faith until every 1.5 miles when I heard the sounds of Team iGnite–sirens, cheering and the non-stop dance party.  Hearing and seeing my friends was not only comforting and energizing, but their support enabled me to keep going and feel confident that I could do this!

In hindsight, this was analogous to life.  There are so many times during our life journey when we are not exactly sure what lie on the road ahead, and it’s during these times that we don’t need to focus on the end or even know the exact route.  Rather, the opportunity is to accept and trust our challenge or unsure path, don’t worry about crossing a bridge until we need to and take it one step at a time – one minute, one day and one week at time – knowing that when we don’t have the answers, strength or confidence to take that next step, the answers will come and our community of friends and family will lift us up and pull us through. It’s pretty awesome!

The next significant impact came after we finished the relay at Camp Mabry.  BBDF held a kids 2K around the beautiful and new track.  Durant, my four-year-old son, wanted to run and despite being physically juiced, I could not turn down my little’s guy’s desire.  He was the youngest and we were at the back of the pack of kids and having fun running when I looked to my left and saw Christiane Benson running WAY ahead of us.   (Christiane is the precious 12 year old who was diagnosed with Batten Disease when she was five years old and is the inspiration of the Beyond Batten Disease Foundation.)  What you may or may not know is that Christiane is blind.  She can see blurry objects and will one day be completely blind.  You would think this would slow her down, but not even close.  Christiane wasn’t just running- she was sprinting!  Had I not known who she was, I would have NEVER thought she was blind or had a terminal illness.  She did have a friend nearby, but this full of life and fearless child was beyond inspirational and once again proved to me that not only is anything possible, but also no disability or illness can define or determine our limits.  In fact, there are no limits to what each of us are capable of doing. Not just physically, but in life in general.  Nothing can or should get in our way of living a full and fearless life!  If Christiane Benson can do it, so can we!

Finally, below are beautiful quotes and personal testimonials from Team iGnite and our Run to the Sun experience. We cannot thank you enough for your donations, support, thoughts and prayers.  Our team goal was to raise $6,500 and so far we’ve raised $7,335 and hope to continue to raise more throughout the remainder of the week.  This is incredible!  We felt lifted up by your support and prayers, and for those we are so grateful!

Team iGnite/Run to the Sun Testimonials

Babe Keahey: I loved the encouragement and joy everyone had when cheering on the runners throughout the night!  Whenever it started getting difficult- there was always a light at the end knowing that your teammates were welcoming you to finish.

Catherine SandersonWhat struck me most was the impact that having a team of friends wholeheartedly supporting me and reminding me they believed in me and that I could do it in moments where I was struggling to believe I could go on had on my ability to push through a hard run.  Such a perfect illustration of being able to go further and be stronger when we allow others to fully support and sometimes carry us through hard times.  A close second favorite memory is our glow stick rave dance parties in the middle of country roads in the pitch black! 🙂

Courtney Seal: Run to the Sun was an incredible challenge and event where each leg of the race was full of both unforeseen challenges and rewards both physically and emotionally. Amazing experience and amazing to share it together.

Jenni Thurow: The Run to the Sun made me realize that the words and support of others are SO powerful. The words of others can help us accomplish things either we never would try or we never thought would be possible.  Every time I wanted to give up I would see the iGnite team in a distance and I would be fully recharged.  Anytime I was ready to give up or got scared being by myself in the middle of the night I would see the blinking lights of the Tahoe in the distance and know I was not alone.  What an amazing run!

Jessie D’Andrea: Run to the Sun was an amazing experience that I will never forget.  From running in the darkness of the night, but knowing I wasn’t alone, to lifting these children who are battling Batten Disease up in support and prayer, I treasure the memories.  Also, the kind of team support Team iGnite showed not only to our own team but to the other teams’ runners will forever be in my heart.

Kathleen ParkerA truly unforgettable experience.  Words can’t describe the outpouring of love and support I felt.  Truly life changing for all of us.

Laura Gentner: The spirit and friendship of the group was uplifting and genuine.  It was amazing how committed this team was to rallying around each woman during the race – cheering and pumping them up the entire time.  I’m so glad for the experience and to know the iGnite women even better.

Maggie McCauley: Unbelievably rewarding. The love, encouragement, spirit, and fun shared by our team and beyond taught me so much in so little time.  I now truly understand what teamwork and camaraderie mean.  Knowing that you are going to see someone who cares and believes in you throughout a tough run makes the difference.  Run to the Sun has inspired me to accept every challenge knowing that I have a team who will always support me.

Molly DanielsI loved every minute of the experience because it was non-stop support — yelling, cheering, dancing, laughing, singing — for every person running, whether or not they were on Team iGnite.  What an inspiring event that I will always remember!

Paige Clark: I loved the magic of running through the peaceful dark stillness of the Texas Hill Country at night, which was made even more special by the constant enthusiasm, joy and loving support of Team iGnite. What FUN we had!!

Move Like Jagger: 3 Dance-Inspired Exercises for Cardio & Strength

betty_640px

Betty Cunningham

Cardio Dance, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to improve your cardiovascular endurance while simultaneously working multiple muscle groups and keeping your body and mind constantly challenged. Dancing improves your brainpower, your outlook and your overall fitness level.

The constant flow of mood-improving chemicals released in a dance class means that “getting your groove on” can elevate your mental state and slay depression. Dancing also gives the memory and coordination areas of the brain a real workout leading to stronger synapses and toned up grey matter.

Also, incorporated into Dance Fit and Zumba are plyometric exercises that train your body anaerobically, working the fast muscle twitch fibers and therefore improving muscular strength.  In my classes we work aerobically to improve cardio endurance and anaerobically to improve muscular strength. Plyometrics improve your bone density too!

You don’t have to be able to move like Jagger to reap the health benefits of dancing. The more time you spend on the dance floor, front row or back row, the more time you’re training your brain to send out those endorphins! So what are waiting for — let’s dance!

All of these exercises are generally incorporated into a cardio dance work out and can be performed as a group one after the other. Repeat the group for three sets of each exercise.

Exercise 1: Plié Heel Clicks

plie heel kicks

This exercise is a plyometric explosive movement that works the inner and outer thigh muscles, the quadriceps and glutes and of course sends your heart rate through the roof!

  • Starting Position: Stand with your feet spaced slightly wider than shoulder width with your toes pointing slightly outwards. Lower yourself into a sitting position. Your thighs should be as parallel to the floor as you can manage.
  • Push off the balls of your feet, jump and bring your heels together while airborne.
  • Ending Position: Land softly on the balls of your feet lowering the heels to the ground

Complete 3 sets of 8.

Exercise 2: Standing Leg Lifts

standing leg lifts

Standing leg lifts work your inner thighs, (adductors), core and the supporting quadriceps. This exercise also strengthens and lengthens the hamstring.

  • Starting Position: Stand with one knee slightly bent and the other leg extended in front of you, pointing the toe. Rotate the toe slightly out and hold the extended leg at least two inches off the floor.
  • Slowly lift the leg to your maximum height and then lower the leg with control to the ground without letting the lifting leg touch the ground.
  • You can add small hand weights to engage the upper body.

Complete 8 lifts on the right leg and 8 lifts on the left leg. Repeat 3 times.

Exercise 3: Mini Ball Thigh Burner

miniball thigh burner

This exercise strengthens the quadriceps and engages the core and the glutes.

  • Starting Position: Place a miniball high between the inner thighs. Stand beside a bar or wall and place one hand on the bar/wall for support. Raise your heels as high as possible off the ground and stand on your toes with feet about 4 inches apart.
  • Slowly lower your body down, keeping the tailbone tucked under until your thighs are parallel to the gound. Slowly raise up to starting position and keep squeezing the ball.

Complete 3 sets of 8.

Life Without Coffee

by Betty Cunningham

by Betty Cunningham

I love coffee. I love the smell, I love the taste, I love the way it makes me feel. Some of my fondest memories involve a cup of coffee. I love coffee.

A long long time ago, before Starbucks was on every corner in America, the first place I would visit upon my return to my Homeland, was the original Starbucks on the corner of 1st and Pike in Seattle. Coffee and I go way back.

Breakfast of champions

As much as I love coffee, I know in my heart of hearts, the effect of caffeine on my digestive system is not always positive and I knew that I needed a reboot away from caffeine and the one I love.

The first day of the reboot was fantastic for about the first six hours. Then…..the headache, I needed a nap, and please somebody bring me some chips!

Day two and three were miserable. I began having bad thoughts about the reboot and anyone associated with it. I was in a complete fog and my brain was shutting down. Help me, I’m melting…. I must admit that I had a Starbucks on Friday and I loved it. The good news is though, I did not fall completely off the wagon and I have made it another two days without caffeine.

Takeout salads for lunch in Dallas

Today, I felt great. I felt light all day long and my brain was functioning at full capacity. I started the day with the breakfast of champions: Oatmeal with strawberries and almond milk, and of course hot lemon water.

I caught a flight to Dallas and had a working lunch with a take-out salad and I even made a bottle of cranberry water for the trip.

Dinner I shared a Maudie’s power bowl and fruit salad by Kyle.

I have learned that I can live without coffee and that my body is actually thanking me for the reboot.
