I’ve lived in Austin since 1994, when my husband Keith and I moved here as he finished grad school. My dad was a native of Austin, his father was an engineering professor at UT, and his half-sister was living here when we moved. She introduced me to walk the hike n’ bike trails in Austin. My parents and older sister all went to UT for college, so we have lots of ties here.

Family life:
I am married to Keith, who I met in college at Duke, where we both were members of a Christian singing group. We married about 5 years after college when I had begun my pediatric residency and he was in grad school. We used to do worship music at various churches over the years, since he plays piano and I sing. We are blessed with three awesome children by adoption, each arriving to us as a baby. The oldest is Louisa, who just turned 18 and is a senior at Austin High. The second is Jonathan, 15 and a sophomore at McCallum, where he plays piano and is in the band. Lauren rounds out the group. She is also 15 but 6 weeks younger than her brother. She is Louisa’s full sister and was a surprise to us! They are the best kids, they get along well and they love their adoption stories.

Work life:
I am a pediatric hospitalist, which I’ve done for the past 19 years in Austin. I used to work at the old Children’s Hospital on 15th but now work at Dell Children’s. I love my job. It gives me joy and great satisfaction to help children and families through the stress of illness. I feel so honored to work with the caring professionals there. It is a wonderful team. And best of all, I get to do it part-time so I can also be present for my kids!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience…
I’ve learned to trust my body to be strong and my energy to be enough for each day. I enjoy exercise and the outdoors, and I find it so much more motivating to workout with others, so iGnite suits me well! The other women are so inspiring and encouraging to me.

I’m most inspired by…
My kids inspire me. They are unafraid to be themselves, which keeps reminding me to live an authentic, present life!

In my free time…
I’ve been reading a lot lately. I helped start up a book club in our neighborhood a year or two ago, and it’s been fun to read a big variety of books chosen by the group. I rediscovered books about 7 years ago – when the kids were finally all in school! – and I’ve been a happy reader ever since. I also do some creative sewing and even a little quilting. I’m saving more of that hobby for when I have grandkids!

My celebrity look alike is…
Katie Couric and Princess Leia from Star Wars, so I am told!

I am originally from Dixon, a small town in northern Illinois, about 90 miles west of Chicago. I came to Austin over 30 years ago to attend UT, and like so many others, I never left! I love my city!

Family Life:
I have been married to my husband, Jeff, for 22 years! We have two boys, Drew (21) and Chase (19). Drew will be a senior at UT Austin. Chase will be a sophomore at the University of Arkansas. We are enjoying being empty-nesters!!

Work Life:
I am a third grade teacher at Caraway Elementary. I have been teaching for 20 years. I took a few years off when my boys were young, and I will always be grateful for that time. Before going back to the classroom full-time, I taught part-time and substitute taught. Easing my way back was the way to do it!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience…
iGnite has taught me that building a community with those you workout with has such a positive effect on how I view exercising and taking good care of myself. The relationships I’ve formed with those I workout with (and work with!) are invaluable. I treasure the time I get to spend with my group, and it motivates me to want to keep coming to class every week. Molly has been instrumental in this, as she comes to our school twice weekly to lead us in amazing workouts.

I am most inspired by…
My late father inspired me with his selflessness as he raised a son with special needs. He did this on his own, everyday, for nearly 30 years. His huge heart and loving ways are an inspiration to me everyday.

In my free time…
I enjoy hanging with my family and friends, reading, boating, shopping and traveling when I’m able! We also love to take our dog, Cola, to all the dog-friendly places Austin offers!

My guilty pleasure…
Shoe shopping. I love shoes, especially boots!!

I was born and raised in Orange County, California. In 2013, after I graduated from college and my husband finished his time in the military, we moved to Austin an have been here for the past three years.

Family Life:
I am married to the most amazing man, Rob. We do not have children yet; for now, we have our two sweet pups, Milo the Corgi and Bruce the Doberman.

Work Life:
I am currently the special education teacher of a self-contained Functional Academic Classroom and am in the educational process of becoming certified as a teacher of the visually impaired as well.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience…
The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience is two-fold. It is that I need to take the time to take care of myself, and in doing so, that I am able to push myself to do more and better in so many ways throughout my life.

I’m most inspired by…
Many of you know that “inspire” is an important concept to me based on the tattoo that adorns my back. I try to find inspiration in all aspects of life, as well as find ways to inspire others. But, if I had to choose the first thing that comes to mind when asked who or what inspires me most, it would have to be the individuals with special needs that I am so blessed to work with. Knowing all the struggles and challenges they have to face on a regular basis, yet getting to see how much love they have for life and for others and how hard they strive persevere and learn is truly amazing.

Something people may not know about me…
I grew up backpacking since I was five years old. I have hiked the Grand Canyon three times, and it is my favorite place on Earth. Since moving, I have not been able to go as much, but I hope to continue exploring nature throughout my life.

My favorite color is…
Red because it can represent so many deep, intriguing ideas, from love and passion to determination and strength, or even a touch of danger. It’s such an exciting color – not to mention my obsession with roses has an influence on this.

I love this journey of life I am on and know that I am incredibly blessed. I am grateful for iGnite and look forward to many more great memories made!

I was born and grew up in Houston, Texas. I came to the University of Texas in 1975 and have been lucky enough to have lived in Austin ever since. There is no other city I would rather live in!

Family life:
My husband is Tim, and we met at UT my junior year. We dated four years, married in 1981 and are celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary this year. We have two daughters, and the eldest is Mary Catherine who is 29 and moving back home from New York City after living there for seven years. Lizzy is 25, lives in Austin and currently works in business development for Corridor Title. We are really looking forward to all being united in the same city.

Work Life:
My work background was in women’s retailing, which includes sales, being a buyer and store manager. My current involvement in the community is as a volunteer. I serve on the Vestry at Good Shepherd Church and am also co-chair of an event this November called Maj for a Mission that supports Victory School in Uganda.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience…
The biggest lesson I have learned through iGnite is to keep moving and how important exercise and community is to promote health and wellness in your life. I thrive better in a supportive group atmosphere.

The best advice I’ve been given…
My mother used to tell me one should never wish for someone else’s life because you never know what trials they have faced, are facing or will face. We need to have gratitude for the life we have been given and never assume we know what others are dealing with.

Something people may not know about me…
I lived in Rio de Janeiro as a little girl for three years when my father was sent to Brazil to manage a manufacturing business. Our apartment was one block off Ipanama Beach.

My celebrity look alike…
This is such a funny question to me that I had to respond to provide a few laughs. People have told me I look like the deceased actress Ava Gardner, Lynda Carter, the original Wonder Woman, and Lucie Arnez, Lucille Ball’s daughter. Who knew? A few years ago, an acquaintance told me I reminded her of someone by the way I talked and said it was Robin Roberts. Really???

I grew up in Crested Butte, Colorado, and came to Austin in August of 2010 to attend the University of Texas at Austin. I graduated in May of 2014 and have been here ever since, so I’m going on 6 years of loving this city!

Family Life:
I am an only child, and my parents now live in Las Vegas, NV, so if you ever want to go to sin city, they love company! I have a boyfriend, Cameron, who works in the urban planning sector of Austin at RCLCO. We’ve been together for over 2 years now, and he is a good motivator for me to stay in shape because he loves to run and workout!

Work Life:
After graduation, I began working at JHL Company and have been here since January 2014 when I interned for the Mack, Jack & McConaughey event. We do a broad spectrum of public affairs, marketing, communications, event planning and fundraising. My role as Account Manager focuses on overall strategic communications, event logistics and execution for both private and non-profit clients, which I absolutely love!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience:
While I’ve only been at iGnite for 2 months, I’ve loved every second of it from meeting tons of new friends to getting in better shape! The biggest lesson I’ve learned thus far is that hard workouts go hand-in-hand with personal improvement including making the time I work count so that I can have more time to relax and digitally disconnect, which is a challenge for me!

I’m most inspired by…
As cliche as this sounds, I am most inspired by my parents. They found a way to do something they love for a living – they have incorporated sports and their passion for giving back to the community into a career – all while managing to be wonderful parents and do things that they enjoy on a daily basis like playing tennis and grilling out!

In my free time…
I love to cook, take cooking classes, and I obsess over the Food Network, but more than that, I love to travel! My goal is to visit every state in the US, every country in Europe, and every continent at least once (although Antarctica might be a stretch!).

My guilty pleasure…
My guilty pleasure is definitely watching reality TV. I know it is a horrible habit, but I am a sucker for The Bachelorette and any/all Oxygen and Bravo shows like Below Deck and The Real Housewives!

Family Life:
I met my husband, William, at Vanderbilt. We married the January following graduation. We have five wonderful children and five beautiful grandchildren. Merrill (30) and Chase Laguarta live in Austin with their three daughters (5, 3, and 15 months). Megan (29) lives in NYC. Walker (27) and his wife Haley live in Oahu with their two boys (23 months and 6 months). Molly Frances (25) and her husband Joe Denham live in Austin. And last, but not least, Mallory (23) lives in Chicago.

Work Life:
I am a Registered Nurse (currently unemployed).

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience…
Hmmm…that’s a hard one. I have so many lessons learned through iGnite but I would say my biggest take away is that there is so much wisdom to glean from all ages
of women. I have learned as much from the younger women as I have from my peer group. These young ladies are mature and very cool!
The best advice I’ve ever gotten… “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it’s own.”  Matthew 6:34

As a mother of five children, I have done my share (and more) of worrying. I knew as a Christian it was not biblical to worry, but I was very stubborn in this area. I think I somehow believed the amount of worry correlated with my love for my family or some such nonsense. I did bible studies on worry, read books on worry, but yep, you guessed it, I continued to worry. I am a very slow learner. I didn’t release my kids until my son joined the army. At that point, it became very apparent to my that I WAS NOT IN CONTROL. All of those wasted hours worrying…as I loosened my grip on my children, I had a new outlook on life. When our son deployed to Afghanistan, I didn’t want his absence and my worry to define me. Instead, I put into action what I knew but never truly embraced…God has a plan, and I need to trust in that. So there you have it. I let go and trusted God. Every day is a new day, and daily I have to renew my trust. I must admit that I am so grateful that I’m not in control. It’s too big of a job for me! Do I still worry some? YES of course…I am a work in progress 🙂

Something people may not know about me…
I am a NCIS junkie.

My guilty pleasure…
A glass of bubbly at lunch.

Family Life:
This year my husband Mike and I will celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary with our sweet boys, Colin (9) and Deagan (6).

Work Life:
When I moved to Austin, I started working at Dell in sales and then as a consultant in the Executive Briefing Center. When Colin was born, I became at SAHM (stay-at-home-mom), as I like to fill out under occupation on forms. 🙂

The biggest lesson I’ve learned through my iGnite experience…
The community of women and leaders within iGnite are exactly who I want to surround myself with at a time in my life where I can truly appreciate the experience. It is uplifting to be around a group of ladies who create such a welcoming environment.

The best advice I’ve been given…
One of my favorite pieces of advice is from my husband who, a long time ago told me, “The grass is greener where you water it.” I try and focus on that statement in all verticals in my life and try to be present in the moment because I know the more positive energy you put into an experience, the more you will get out of it.

Something people may not know about me…
I’ll bring it back to a glory days moment – I was a college cheerleader at the University of Missouri – GO MIZZOU!

My celebrity look alike is…
It was more prevalent in the “Sex and the City” days, but I am often told I look and act like Sarah Jessica Parker. My hair is naturally curly for those of you who only see it straight. 🙂 My best friend even entered me in a SATC look-a-like contest – flower on the tank and all!
